LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO

Hi, I’m Marcela, and I’m a junior at Loyola University and a first-generation Latina student. My major is English Creative Writing, and I am minoring in Spanish. Being the first in my family to go to college was exciting, but mainly frightening. I wasn’t sure what to expect out of my first year. I wasn’t familiar with the resources that Loyola offered until much later on, which would have been useful in the beginning. It was difficult entering and adjusting to a new environment alone. I believe that having a friend/mentor from the beginning would have made my transition a lot easier. Because of this, my goal through the Liaison program is to help incoming students enter their first year of college with at least one friend they can depend on for guidance and support. Through my past experiences, I am able to offer much insight as to what resources and information are essential for incoming students to know. This knowledge will help make their first year a successful, enjoyable experience.
